Vtg Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting

This item is a vintage hand-painted shikishi art board. It shows a red cup, most likely a water or tea cup, and a cherry blossom on the right of the cup. The art board is signed with the artist's name and red seal. This art board is a unique timeless display piece that can find a place in any home or office decor.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
