You just place the garlic on the blades and press down. The garlic lands in the little clear container. I had a fat clove of garlic so I cut mine before I placed it on the dicer. It diced it with no problem. If I had a normal sized clove it would've easily chopped it. It has a little cleaning grid that helps get the garlic out of the lid section for easy washing.
